People vote for Traitor McConnell because he’s on what they perceive to be “their team.” When I discuss politics with rank-and-file Republicans (i.e. non-oligarchs, pretty much the only kind of Republican you or I are likely to meet), I usually ask them what they like about individual Republican politicians. Much of the time they deflect with critiques of who they imagine these politicians’ opponents are. Sometimes they voice vague platitudes about what sort of people they imagine these politicians to be. Rarely do they know what these politicians have voted for, what sort of speeches they’ve given, or what their defining political actions have been. This is a game to most people.
