I fear that the Tory conference has turned out to be a coup planned elsewhere; Iâd almost be willing to put money on the last two candidates being Sunak and Mordaunt, and then one of them will mysteriously step aside, to avoid the need for a membership vote - although I think that the Tories would be fine with a fast vote right now because it would add deniable plausibility even when the âloserâ gets a big Cabinet post.
(Oh, and weâll all be distracted by stories of Johnson returning in triumph but there is literally no way the parliamentary party would allow that.)

If it doesnât take years of probing questions, intimate physicals and at least two letters from professionals on their mental health state then I call foul.
