I fear that the Tory conference has turned out to be a coup planned elsewhere; I’d almost be willing to put money on the last two candidates being Sunak and Mordaunt, and then one of them will mysteriously step aside, to avoid the need for a membership vote - although I think that the Tories would be fine with a fast vote right now because it would add deniable plausibility even when the ‘loser’ gets a big Cabinet post.
(Oh, and we’ll all be distracted by stories of Johnson returning in triumph but there is literally no way the parliamentary party would allow that.)
