Hmm, my hair is curlier than his, but it does the same ‘sticking straight out from the head’ thing. Maybe it’s this, and not just a confluence of many different curly hair genes.
(Hence why I got the nickname “fuzz” at school, and have kept it ever since.)
Apparently it should be visible in the shape of the individual hairs under a microscope, so now I just need to get hold of a microscope…
