Understand the history of heavy metal by watching this single song

This video is incomplete without my two favorite metal genres:

Technical/avant-garde metal

Swedish Folk Metal

I use the word “favorite” in the loosest sense.

That really drove home how indebted the genre is to surf guitar!

Weird that people with tribal tattoos are tribalistic about their mildly different-sounding music.

Symphonic Metal sounds really interesting. I’d like to hear more of the genre. I remember a couple of decades ago “Speed Metal Symphony” came out, and I really liked it. As I was listening to the video, I kept wondering how many songs in each category Megadeth has. Or would they just be speed metal, and not on this list?

Funtwo did a full version years ago. Eh, probably most here are already familiar with it but it is always fun.

There are many amazing versions of this. In fact, it is somewhat difficult to find out how the original sounded. One of my favorite version is the one done with traditional Korean instruments, DJ’s and break dancers, which oddly turns out to be a bank commercial.

A few bands with music written to be played by symphonies as well as a band:

Dimmu Borgir
Within Temptation
Epica
Nightwish

ETA: Epica

Well, Joey Ramon had OCD pretty bad. I think it eventually led to his death as a contributing factor.

I forgot to link this yesterday. One of my favorite bands  It mixes swing, opera and metal.
