I suspect that when Tom Wolfe wrote that, 45 or so years ago, there may have been some truth in it. It certainly sounded like what you heard on television, but it’s decreasingly true outside television. Also, and this might seem pretty obvious, the last pilot I heard sounded nothing like Chuck Yeager because he was speaking Finnish.
