A new study finds bacteria in urine?!? Any woman who ever suffered a UTI is living proof there’s bacteria in urine. WTAF???

I don’t know where this idea that urine is sterile comes from. I remember raising an eyebrow when it turned up in later books of Poul Anderson’s Dragon and the George series.
Possibly it was a WWII factoid to make people feel better in those “better drink my own piss” survival situations.
I suppose if there was no alternative, it’d be better to wash a wound than mosquito-infested bog water with a rotting carcass in the middle of it.
A 2016 research review with animals showed that if you need to drink urine, you’ll try to drink it immediately after it leaves your body. This is because urine naturally attracts bacteria due to the ■■■■■ environment.
You’ll likely take in the least amount of bacteria if you drink urine quickly.

If that safety tip is ever that important to me, then I will already have had cause to re-evaluate all the life choices which led me to that point.

i actually had no idea if it was sterile or not – just quoting a line from a movie. either way there will be no firsthand research on the subject.

I feel like the point of a lot of the other safety tips is to prevent situations where you need the safety tips about drinking pee.
