so, where is the money for this coming from? is it from cutting food stamps for the poor?

in other news, i’m taking a bit of smile from the thought that since 45 is a total germaphobe, this whole thing is probably one of his worst nightmares.

No cuts. Per the House bill, it’s appropriated “from any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.”

Great to see this Administration throwing its support behind socialized medicine.

8.3 billion is a rounding error in the US Federal budget.

But that didn’t stop Rand Paul from insisting there be some kind of cuts to foreign aid to “balance” the expenditures.

The proof is in the pudding. How this gets spent will determine the impact. I have nightmare visions of using it to shore up the “heavily impacted energy sector.” Which would be bad.

In related news, Trump, a noted germophobe, has called off a planned trip to the Atlanta headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Only temporarily called off, it seems…

So it got signed - the devil is in the details. What does the law say about how the money is supposed to be spent? Pence may decide to use half of it to buy Bibles and distribute them so people can pray the gaygerms away.

Yeah, but probably not.

As horrible as the president is, not everyone in congress is an idiot and know this issue needs to be addressed.

Of course he’s too fucking dense to realize that foreign aid is one of the ways we try to prevent and contain global crises like disease pandemics BEFORE they make it to our shores, so it’s still a good investment even if you’re a sociopathic shitweasel.

And thus money that could have been directed to the poor, food stamps, medicare etc. Don’t get all happy about that.

I’m neither happy nor unhappy about it. Just answering a question.

But, as you certainly are aware, we have a government in which at best one half of one branch and some smaller fraction of a second would ever have considered using the money for social-welfare programs. The fact that there was bipartisan agreement to use this money for healthcare also means it won’t be appropriated into, say, building a wall or putting refugees in cages. We take our small victories where we can get them.

Umm, I am gonna call “citation needed” on that…
