USDA will no longer refer to small raisins as “midgets,” after Little People petition

So we’re all settled then? We’re free to use the word ‘midget’ (in relation to things other than people), you’re free to refrain, others are free to feel offended and others are free not to.
Sounds good. We’re all free.
I hope we’re all friends again.

I thought I understood the preference for “little person”–it puts the emphasis back on “person”. A little person is not defined by their stature-- though upon occasion it does affect how little persons interact with the physical world…

But now, I’m not so sure. From the post article.

“It does sound like a small thing, but when people see it in reference to raisins, they think it’s also okay to use it in reference to people.”

In other words. some people are dumb. And apparently, we must thus remold language to cater to the thoughtless.

… and then there are midgets that leak oil.
