Except patriarchal control is often enacted via other women. It’s not just about men acting on women to control them, but the creation of a stifling set of norms which gives men many more options then women. Women who act within those norms receive cultural backing and support, which makes them more likely to work to control other women…
About the only thing white males are good for these days is to serve as an example of the stuff we need to evolve beyond. That and a few of us can cook & make things.
Except for all the white males that aren’t sexist, racist assholes, attempting to talk over the rest of humanity with their “truth”. I don’t have a problem with white males when they actually listen and work to end oppression, or at the very least don’t actively impede it. I have a problem when they shrug their shoulders and act as if the world is okay just the way it is. I want them all to join us over here, because the world gets better when we work to end oppression together.
When men do it, it’s just boys being boys, totally acceptable. When women do it, they need to be punished, because women’s only true role is pleasing men and having babies… duh. /s

Lots of people suggesting leverage the meme. Monetizing it, mostly. And that’s great, if that’s what the … victim (for want of a better word) wants. But for those whose lives have been taken out of context and reduced to a single point in time who don’t want the attention, or any kind of leverage from that attention, what then?
Light saber boy - remember him? was just a child. A little boy. He didn’t have the maturity, or maybe even just the same personality that @Veronica had/has, to shake it off, to want to turn the experience into something good. At the time, he just wanted to be left alone to be his own brand of Star Wars nerd. His experience was taken out of the context of the entirety of his life and exploited for the amusement of others. I respect and even like the idea of empathy for those who don’t understand context, but that’s for the victim to decide, not the perpetrators.
He was also mocked on a much younger web, when communicating to large audiences was a more complicated affair. And he was younger when it happened, so there was probably an emotional maturity gradient there.
I don’t think they compare very well. In any way.
That said, I’ll join the chorus of folks who hadn’t heard of @Veronica before this piece, and kudos to her for turning it to her advantage. Or to you, since you’re here, @Veronica.
Meme-ing people is not going to go away any time soon, and the meme’d, if they’re smart will find ways to make it work for them. Some won’t for sure, and that’s tragic.
You don’t have much of choice. These situations happen. Try to swim against the wave, and exhaust your resources and be swept away. Or you can surf the wave for all it gives.
Sometimes the decision is made for you. Then you can milk it for all it gives; there are examples. Or try to go against it and fail; there are examples. (Or you can aim for the middle ground, and just wait it out until it mostly passes. But it is maybe the most difficult option, as when you think you have to do something, doing nothing is the hardest choice. Also, no gain from it.)
Yeah, it depends on the context of the meme and its subsequent usage - compare the meanspiritedness of “the lightsabre kid” meme with the “ERMAGHED” meme. Both got turned into memes, but they both had very different experiences of it.
Also of note: it’s legal for women to be topless in Ontario. Has been for years and years. Said young lady totally had the basis for a real human rights complaint.
