US rationing was done more for psychological reasons than out of need and only specific materials were impacted, so unless seats were made of nylon or silk, that shouldn’t have affected anything - though I suppose there could have been issues with a lack of workers to quickly fix them. I suspect, however, that it wasn’t any worse than before or after the war - businesses just liked to connect themselves to the war effort, even when it wasn’t remotely relevant.

Ironically, he started his radio show after his church was attacked by the KKK and he was trying to educate the public about Catholics. But he eventually devolved into anti-semitism and anti-FDR rhetoric.
In fairness to TIME Magazine it was widely understood back then that the distinction wasn’t necessarily meant as a compliment so much as a recognition of who was an influential figure on the world stage that year. Several other figures who were no friends of the United States have been named “Man/Person of the Year” as well, including Josef Stalin and Vladimir Putin.
