Never seen them. But I do, however, watch British comedies (and some of that shit is dark), which have probably shaped my expectations…

I still think that the darkest British Comedy is “Steptoe and Son”. I know it is well written and acted, but I can’t get up the emotional speed to face that bleak world of abusive relationships.

I don’t think that the UK version was really very “edgy” or any more overtly racist than anything else on UK TV in the 70s. However, the central relationship of the weak middle aged man and the 'orrible old man was caustic and novel.
