Holy Moly, I thought I was losing my mind. I was like, “I know I’m blowing this somehow, but I just can’t see where.”
Actually one thing I would just add is that the difference between total deaths and total population has been messing with my head, too. I guess if we all die eventually, then the death statistics will eventually apply to us. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Sure, you can’t say how this particular cop would have reacted if the guy was black, at least not without further information about his history on the job.
But it’s undeniable that statistically, the likelihood of any cop having shot the man to death if he was black in the same situation is fairly high.
And while it’s fucked up that any cop, who must have received training in apprehending an unarmed suspect without resorting to lethal force, would shoot anyone in this situation, it’s very much more fucked up that the likelihood of him doing so is based on the suspect‘s skin colour.
Also unsurprising: Last year VA police tased and murdered with extreme prejudice a naked, unarmed black man who hadn’t hurt anyone and who was having a severe mental health crisis.
Are you talking about the Anthony Hill shooting in ATL? I think I posted that upthread. If there is more than one of those, I’m entirely unsurprised, though.
Amen. And maybe not shot, but killed for: selling loose cigarettes, playing, running while it’s dark out, driving,…the list is unbearably long and saddening.
