Tortoise is generally used for land critters. Turtles for both water based and certain limited land based critters (think box turtle).
So no tortoises are always land based, including those in the desert.
I do, but thatâs just the first thing that popped into my head.
I think they updated this for todayâs culture.

I donât think he was using the terms interchangably. The questioner used tortoise consistantly. I read it as another example of the dudeâs ignorance that he kept using the wrong word.
