Watch: AMAZING slam poem about policing women's speech habits

The bits you left out of your quote mining obviously.

e.g. “She’s pretending to be outraged that imaginary old white men are somehow telling her that the internet is ruining the English language.”

Oh gtfo dude, seriously. I really wish you could see how pathetic that sounds. There is no rule like that here, there just isn’t! No one’s “forcing” anyone to do what you claim if men are acting reasonable and non-abusive, and no one is saying that women are “better” than men (not even better than men who act like you’re acting).

The problem is a patriarchal order that privileges men and their prescribed behaviors and does the opposite for women and their prescribed behaviors. Some women ALSO say and do things that support the patriarchy and damage women. Who knew?!

Do you seriously not know what people mean when they say that we live in a patiarchy? And that both men and women often uphold it?

I know what they mean, I just don’t believe it.

Listen to Ira Glass’s TAL episode on vocal fry and you’ll find out that yes, in many ways, human hearing is socially constructed.

People are subjective, and in many ways, the social order shapes subjectivity. Again, who knew?! (IOW, that seems pretty bloody obvious to me.)

It must be nice in your world.
I would like to live there.

frequency response is not socially constructed, that is a fact.

the real world is ok, has it’s pros and cons.

The latter, from what I’ve heard, but maybe not “mostly.”

I’m not a social linguist, but Googling “social linguistics gender differences” would probably lead to a lot of research that addresses your questions. Have fun!

FTF Y , you’re welcome.

I see. I should’ve realized sooner that you’re a flat-earther with a sealed-up brain. I do see now though that you deserve no more of my time and energy. Ta.

comparing skepticism of the just-so stories of social theorists to belief in a flat-earth is pretty funny. it must be pretty cozy in your little intellectual bubble. the wider world is a much more interesting place than you think it is though, you should try it out some time.

Never fails – tell a mansplainer “we’re done talking now, bye,” and he jumps right back in with (even more assholish) talk. Is that like, some macho need for always getting the last word, or what? RHETORICAL QUESTION

So you’re not done talking then? Only women are allowed to have the last word now as well, I’ve learned another new rule apparently. Highly productive day.

Thanks :slightly_smiling:
I should say that this feels vaguely theoretical to me: I work in a research group of about 40 people, with a solid female majority (something like 7:1), within a department of some hundred that I’d estimate at 60:40 female. Our female researchers don’t seem to talk or do presentations much differently from the men, and I don’t recognize this described “female” pattern at all. The only thing I’ve noticed is that they tend to be slightly better prepared.

Of course, this could be a linguistic thing (Norwegian is odd enough as-is), or a cultural thing (feminism has arguably done better here than in the US), or a superlocal thing (researchers are weird).

A simple Google search for “internet is ruining the english language” will pull up enough evidence that there are old white men who are arguing just that. Steven Poole’s discussion of it highlights the issue:

Saying that she’s making something up that can be proven easily with a short search is not substance. It’s a lazy attempt to say that she shouldn’t haven’t spoken because she’s wrong.

Good to hear, hope it is going better there, and in your setting, those kinds of gender proportions would make a difference.

Interesting that you note that the women tend to be better prepared to do their presentations. Here, that’s also often the case, and the reason tends to be (as it is for members of other minorities) that women tend to realize they’re given less credibility from a patriarchal mindset (which can include women listeners) as soon as they step to the podium. So, they perceive a need to make SURE they have their “ducks in a row” that men are less likely to perceive for their presentations, because men discern that they’re not suspected of incompetence, not suspiciously regarded just because of their gender, from the outset. Or rather, they don’t perceive the opposite happening to them that does often happen to women; I’m not saying that they tend to even realize this is all going on.

It’s a pretty safe bet that if you insult a person as you’re leaving a thread (" you’re a flat-earther with a sealed-up brain") it’s gonna earn you a response from that person. Which isn’t a macho thing, or a “getting the last word” thing.

Also, nice yelling caps and boldface. Or does this fall under the category of me “policing women’s speech habits”?

Interesting… so a more equal society has better communication? That’s super interesting. Thanks for sharing. Here in Canada and the US we can obviously be doing better.

I posted this up thread but I’d love to hear your take on it.

Have you read some of the comments here? They aren’t engaged in a discussion (however contentious). You and I are indeed having a discussion on this topic, there are some folks here who are not.

And, no, I’m not trolling you.

Wow, so people who disagree with your view of the world are delusional? come on, now.
