You wouldn’t see that many get away from stationary positions at once. My guess is an employee was pushing a stack of carts back to the store and didn’t secure them together as he tried to change directions.

Pro tip: If your car is damaged by a cart, get the store to pay for the repair. The paintless dent repair guy clued me in and Costco paid without hassle.
