That. Makes. No. Sense.

Does he do that with children when there’s no parent in sight?

Clearly the driver is lying. He took the cat and then, in the car, it was probably peeing or having behavior that made him uncomfortable so he dumped it.

You wouldn’t take a stray from 1 place, a nice neighborhood then randomly dump it somewhere else.

I’m more afraid that the driver is psycho and killed the cat, then dumped it. But my faith in humans is a bit skewed right now.

Cats do tend to give off the vibe “I don’t belong to nobody. I am my own master.”

I say that, and I’m a cat-person.

Which is why my indoor cats wear collars with tags on giving my phone number. I did have one person claim that they only stole my cat (an outdoor cat) because letting her go outdoors was abuse. I told her it was theft and brought my cat home.

a feral cat won’t let you anywhere near it. if it let itself be picked up then it’s used to humans and isn’t a stray.

yeah, always. a good idea.

My guess is that he still had the cat in his possession when he was phoned by the owners.

Strays and ferals are different beasts though. Ferals are not socialised to be around humans, while a stray may simply be a lost or abandoned pet. Most of my cats have been strays; friendly but unclaimed. One was feral, or semi-feral, and took rather a long time to become socialised.

This is not a Wonderful Thing unless the follow-up is that the cat is returned safe and sound.

true, but lost is pretty rare for a cat. i dunno much about dogs they’re probably not as smart.

certainly, if i were to see a cat in someone’s driveway, in a sub/urban setting, i’d have no reason to think it was lost or abandoned. coming to the door, looking hungry, maybe. but even then just as likely looking for second breakfast

These days it’s pretty easy to check, because most cats are microchipped.
If you start to be visited by a cat, and it turns out not to have a microchip? Congratulations, you are now the proud possession of a cat.

Found! As noted by @BadCat13 over in the topic where this story got re-Boinged by Pesco yesterday

I think abandoned is more likely than lost if it’s a new cat hanging around your own neighbourhood. I certainly put up lots of “found” posters when I find a cat, and I don’t think I’ve ever been contacted by a frantic owner looking for Fluffy. Sadly.

Holy shit. I made a gag flyer similar to this several years ago.
