Watch: GOP senator warns Taylor Swift that socialism bans women from singing

I have to assume that many conservatives have a big sack into which they stuff all scary, misunderstood, foreign (to them) ideologies. So, Marxism, Socialism, Communism, Islamism. Of course, in some traditional Islamic societies, it would be true that women are not allowed to sing. [Same thing in the more extreme versions of Orthodox Judaism.] So claiming that socialism makes you Islamic or something might make a weird kind of sense.

Even within the Islamic world, as we know, there is a lot of variety, from more traditional societies to very metropolitan, sophisticated areas.

Or, indeed, anything other than Leviticus 18:22.

Is that like when you know the GQP starts making it illegal to teach that the system created for white Americans for white Americans isn’t systemic racism? Or banning evolution theory? Or ban abortions?

Socialism doesn’t do that. Communism, and authoritarian governments do that. So, Senator Blackburn must know that she supports the exact thing that she warns Swift about. It’s not socialism that will control Swifts music. If Blackburn had her way she’d ban Swift entirely.

Why isn’t that ever asked of these GQP politicians? (You can answer it but it’s a rhetorical question).

Women can’t “dress, or sing, to be on stage, or entertain” in public in “socialistic governments”? If I was in that room, I doubt I would be able to respond in any other way than, “Lady, what the fuck are you talking about?” I can’t even.

I’d ask what “Marxist” society she’s thinking of, but I know I couldn’t get an answer. It seems like the right’s straw man version of Islam wasn’t just replaced with a straw man version of “Marxism,” they’ve actually combined the two in their heads for some uber-weird Marxist-Muslim boogeyman that bears no relation to anything in reality.

They’re just mixing up their boogeymen, willy-nilly at this point.

It’s always projection.

Shit, they don’t just conflate “socialism,” “communism” and “Marxism,” but they have no idea what any of those are anyways. That total ignorance makes it much easier to use them as codes for whatever they don’t like. This is the modern version of the '50s conservatives claiming “race mixing is communism.”

To be paired with “You’re the real racist for noticing racism.”

Once more with feeling: socialism isn’t inherently linked to totalitarianism any more than the Republican Party is.

The projection is absolutely blinding.

This is a Christian school teaching about government, so they won’t be learning much at all except maybe: How to Gaslight Women. Or how to appear empathetic while spewing racist stuff.

That’s a feature not a bug. They don’t want them actually learning about US history and law it would confuse them and make it harder for them to push the blatantly untrue history they prefer

Are you sure that last part isn’t true? How they are banning everything seems a little totalitarianism to me?

I thought I could make it through it, but I had to stop immediately at “socialistic government.”

I don’t care for Taylor Swift’s music, but she should definitely record a song about Sputnik and Soviet agronomy just to mock Blackburn.

Can’t wait for Taylor Swift to start singing union strike folk songs in understated earth tone attire.

What rhymes with “Lysenkoism”?

ABBA (and the many other high-profile female-fronted groups and artists from socialist Sweden) disagrees with this premise.

Ace of Bass concurs with that disagreement…

Maybe something like “pinko prison” as reference to the gulags?

But since Swift seems fine with rhyming “you’ve done” with “bad blood,” she’s probably willing to be even more loose than that.

Damn, now I gotta look up Acts 4:35
