That is a weird story. Why did your mom think it was a good idea to take an 8-year-old to a Led Zeppelin concert?
Pardon, I was younger, as my mom informed me over the phone a bit ago, so I was maybe 4 or 5 (she doesn’t remember for sure, either lol)? And it was because she was 22 or 23 at the time and didn’t realize how loud it would be.
I would listen to “Taylor Swift Sings Billy Bragg”
Mine took me to the Ann Arbor Pop Festival when I was 3. I remember being angry that I was so tired when BB King came on, and wound up falling asleep during his brilliant set.
I read that years ago and it was such a piece of shit. I think it largely involved scratching out the word Liberal, writing in Fascist and saying look, these liberals are fascists.
Or Woody Guthrie’s Union Maid. Maybe drop the verse about the Ladies’ Auxiliary because it’s 2021, but the rest would be fine for her. You might say it would be
So glad to see you posting again…
It’s not INHERENTLY part of the party. It doesn’t have to be.
I agree with @Doctor_Faustus on this. Social Democracy is the left wing of mixed economics, part socialism, part capitalism, never going all the way in either direction. This might be an improvement on what we have at the moment, but it will only treat the symptoms of our current economic problems, not the cause. Maybe that would have worked 20-30 years ago, but we have left the problems for so long that more drastic measures are necessary to fix them.
We aren’t so far gone that violent revolution is inevitable, but we have had several warnings that we may go down that path. Ignore them at your peril.
As for socialism, I try my best to keep my mouth shut when I encounter mutualists who insist that they are not socialists. They are not communists, that is true, but the mutualists were part of the First International back when Proudhon was still alive and able to say if they were doing the wrong thing (he never did AFAIK, and even called himself a socialist). On the other hand, I don’t want to scare people away from trying to do the right thing. Maybe one day they can cope with the truth, and that they had been lied to about the nature of socialism.
The scariest part is how much she believed it while saying it.
Just spent 15 minutes trying to get my VPN to work because here in China, the socialist government (something they write everywhere. In front of the mall across the street is a large sign with the phrase “socialist values”) does not want you to look at anything they do not approve of.
Around 12 years ago, I was asked to perform a song on Chinese TV. Before I went on, this guy showed up from the government and requested the lyrics from my song and told me not to deviate from these lyrics when performing. When I saw the Rolling Stones on tour a few years back, Mick announced on stage that the government had told them they were not allowed to perform the song “Brown Sugar”.
Feel free to comment that “China is not a socialist country” but you better let the government over here know that because they sure to say they are, over and over again.
And no, I am not defending the GOP senator. American conservatives have a habit of taking the hint of something truthful and then going nuts with it. Sometimes they are just nutty though.
What you’re describing is authoritarianism, which can be found in both left wing and right wing varieties. The production of culture is tightly controlled in both left and right wing authoritarian countries to varying degrees. Socialism does not have to include that kind of cultural control. Many European countries have some degree socialism in their political systems, and you don’t see the same kind of censorship happening. That’s even less the case with elected American officials who identity as some kind of socialist. I’m fairly certain that Bernie Sanders has never advocated for that kind of censorship, nor has AOC or Rashid Talib.
And Donald Trump says that he is the most innocent man in America, and has millions of people who believe him. It doesn’t make it true.
Dengism is authoritarian state capitalism, not socialism, not communism. Deng Xiaoping was a senior figure in the zouzipai (capitalist roader) movement.
They say they’re a democratic country too. It’s one of Sun Yat-sen’s key principles, you know, and one of the reasons they call themselves a People’s Republic. Maybe what they say doesn’t quite have the meaning you think it does.
