Or until they just get together and take the loot for themselves and go off on their own. There is a reason the term “mercenary” is considered an antonym of “loyal”.
This is why I am going to be the pickle and booze prepper. It doesn’t attract undue attention of marauders and it requires my effort to keep it going. If you want those deviled eggs and that booze, you gotta keep me alive.

I assume most here have read Cory’s novella collection Radicalized? Masque of the Red Death in particular quite satisfyingly exploring the prepper mentality and why it’ll go very very bad for you cowering in a hidey hole filled with your USB drive bitcoin wallets while the survivors rebuild the sanitation plants. It’s got a quite excellent audiobook recording as well.
