Watch New York City's new nuclear war PSA

Duck and Cover gets a bad rap these days because it’s quite misunderstood. It was never meant for anyone within the kill zone of the bomb. Of course hiding under a desk doesn’t help there. It’s for the much larger and much farther-out area where the bomb won’t kill you, but still has enough of a shock wave to knock over buildings. In that zone, hiding under a desk will protect you from falling debris (which is what will kill you in that zone), just like in an earthquake. That’s what the advice was for.

Grimly, there is no PSA for anyone closer in, because closer in was not considered survivable.

To everyone who mocks Duck And Cover, what did you expect? A PSA about how to stand there and be vapourized? If you’re close enough that the heat, blast, or instant-kill-level radiation can reach you, there’s nothing you can do. You won’t even know what ever happened.

Reminds me of this little gem from the instruction manual for the first Fallout game in the late 90’s:

“Finally, if you receive enough gamma radiation to cause sterility or severe sickness, you’ll be killed by blast, flying debris, or heat anyway.”

Unfortunately not all mobile phones have this features, especially the ones designed in Cupertino, but even other manufaturers don’t include this option in all models.
I’m squarely a GenX and I normally listen to FM radio, luckily there are some stations here that have decent music and reasonable comedy shows, so when I work from home I switch on my 30 year old Kenwood receiver and listen to some radio. If someone normally listes on web radios isn’t accustomed to listen analog radio. By the way I have an USB stick to listen to DAB radio, but honestly FM radio sounds better, even if repeaters receive the signal from digital satelite.
