UK has eagles, the closest to a bald eagle is a white-tailed eagle. It also has various octopus, but I am not sure the habitats coincide, North-South metaphor perhaps.

If you are going to be properly heraldic, it should be a lion (possibly a unicorn). Under the circumstances, I’ll settle for a weasel being eaten by a bear. That metaphor fits the bill, I think.

It does seem that the closer a creature is to us, evolutionarily speaking, the more sympathetic we are too its plight; in this case bird is more closely related to to us, but if the bird had caught a cat, or small dog, we’d be on the side of the mammal.
That’s very vertebratist of you. That octopus is probably WAY smarter than that eagle.
