Watch Playboy founder Hugh Hefner clash with members of the Women's Liberation Movement

Does it really need to be pointed out that the research you cite happened some 15 years after Brownmiller made that statement? Her being wrong in this instance isn’t merely ideological rhetoric- the idea that species other than humans could commit rape was in it’s infancy at the time. That our collective understanding has changes since then is hardly a strike against her.

That’s fair, and my intent in first bringing it up was never meant to be a “strike against her.” I did explicitly state that it didn’t invalidate the larger point she was making. It may be pedantic but I felt like people reading that paragraph unchallenged on this discussion thread might come away thinking it to still be an accurate statement of our current understanding of primate behavior.

I suspect she wasn’t traditional, maybe just didn’t like the identity of “feminist”. She was already living the life, a woman in an otherwise male band. She wrote songs, she was vocal, maybe played piano. She didn’t marry Paul Kantner, but had a baby with him. She tried to go to a party for Trisha Nixon at the White House (she got an invite, she attended the same university}, but brought along Abbie Hiffman so that definitely kept them out.
