Watch police contact the YouTube shooter the night before her attack

I am thinking Nasim felt at least several of these…but didn’t, couldn’t, or wouldn’t get the mental health care she needed.

Plus she had a gun.

The one where she doesn’t announce immediately to law enforcement that she is (presumably, considering what happened the next day) in possession of a firearm. Or did I miss that part of the video?

Again, which law? Maybe concealed carry requires that but I have never heard of such a requirement for vehicular possession. Recent events obviously give a rational for not saying so.

Nope, it defintely didn’t happen. The question you dodged is -what are you saying the police did poorly here- ASIDE from her not doing their jobs for them?

Is their foresight in the moment unequal to your hindsight in your armchair? it does seem that way from here, in my armchair.

It’s really hard to say because in California “duty to inform” laws are county-by-county and not statewide. A bit of googling shows Santa Clara is very ccw-un-friendly for whatever that’s worth, but I can’t find anything that says definitively. I’m sure people better versed in the law might know, but I’m not even sure if ccw rules apply, as she didn’t have one and didn’t claim to- and the rules about having a weapon in your car are simply that it be unloaded and locked up (haven’t seen anything that says where she was keeping it). This is one of those things that I’m not sure most people would even know that there’s a law to break- after all she had purchased it legally. I generally don’t consider it my duty to inform officers that I’m following the law. Before Philando Castile I would never have thought to mention it, unless they announced they were doing a search first (and after Philando, I’d think twice about it)

Yes she obviously had. Iranian culture seems to be extremely normative. I have an Iranian neighbor with Autism. He was rejected from his home. I know quite a lot Iranian people and it’s often the same story. Be ‘normal’ or go away and come back when you are.

Yes, I’ve done the same thing too, first at 14 and then again at 18 and I know how extremely hard it is. Keep in mind that she was a girl/woman and a stranger too, possibly with an undiagnosed Asperger condition (like myself at the time, but I digress).

Disclaimer: I haven’t watched the footage, and I’m not sure I will.

That said, wtf? Does this have to be publicly available? This thread with “diagnoses” like she’s an aspie is terrible enough, but the rest of the fucking conspiracysphere, all those shoot-first-ask-questions later know-it-alls, the right-wing wankers looking for “clues” of a “liberal war on” whatever will jump on this like a kid on a pound of caffeine-infused chocolate.

And for the families of the victims, bloody YT (the site/service) should not be the environment to watch it. This belongs in a courtroom, first. And probably, last. (Caveat, as I haven’t watched it, there might - just might- be justified public interest if anything fishy on either side was going on. Judging from the comments so far, I strongly doubt that.)

Disclaimer 2: I’m obviously NOT in favour of the US and British obsession of putting as much information on criminal proceedings into the public domain, as I was socialised in a society which had Schauprozesse over and over again during the Drittes Reich, including public blaming and shaming and loads and loads of political propaganda.

ETA: last paragraph is just and explanation for the strength of my reaction to the casual scrollers and lurkers. Most regulars will know where I’m coming from in regard to my opinion.

It’s a prime example of why gun control saves lives.

If you had mental health training you’d know that being “nuts” is both an ableist term and not sufficient grounds to revoke someone’s freedom - they must be a danger to themselves or others.

Did anyone notice how oddly she interacts with the phone? She is carefully not letting any of her finger tips touch the phone. When she is requested to interact with it, she just uses the bare tip of her pinky finger. Later, at the end of the video she handles the keys the same way–not letting any of her finger tips touch the keys, and picking them up just with the crook of her little finger.

Speculation: It’s almost like she has some strange idea of trying to avoid leaving finger prints on them. She doesn’t act the same way when touching everything, such as her purse, which wouldn’t easily retain fingerprints, or would naturally have her fingerprints. It could be because she is still sleepy and not fully able to be conscious of everything she is touching, or maybe she is particularly worried about some things, like the phone and keys. She didn’t seem to know her phone number, or how to work the phone. It isn’t clear that the keys are the car keys. Maybe the phone and keys are stolen? Or maybe she was thinking ahead that they were going to be used at the scene of the crime? Or maybe it is something else. But there is definitely something weird about the way she is avoiding fingertip contact with the phone and keys.
