totally. i think the one difference is that we report fairly accurately the total number of deaths each year. so that same model can estimate the total us covid deaths within the narrow range of 1.1m to 1.2m. an excess of +40% over the official covid deaths yes, but the error bars are pretty low.
i read an interview with one of those elected but non-medically qualified coroners where he said: “we’re so overworked we just let the families tell us what to put. though if it’s covid, we’ll need proof.”
if that’s not a recipe for low covid reporting – and a few early inheritances, im sure – i don’t know what is.

That was an epic debate. If one specifically wanted a battle of the Mid-Atlantic accents there was also Buckley vs. Gore Vidal. Both Baldwin and Vidal were adept in their own ways at cutting through Buckley’s affected veneer of cool Ivy-League reason and exposing the bigoted thug just underneath.
Modern “debate me” right-wingers like Shapiro and Crowder who treat these serious matters as games learned from Buckley’s error. They strenuously avoid debating anyone they suspect is even slightly smarter or more educated than them, especially if they’re a PoC or LGTBQ or a woman. When Shapiro “destroys” an opponent in one of those YouTube videos it’s usually him responding from the lectern to a college freshman during an audience Q&A.
In contrast, Jordaddy tried his own version of the Buckley style and did try to debate what he saw as intellectual peers. However, his brain has been banged around and fried so much in the past few years by speed and quack coma treatments that he can’t do it anymore.
Bannon spoke at Oxford Union but it wasn’t a debate. The speaking engagement, where he spewed his trash formally unchallenged, was met with the appropriate response by the public and press.

using that coroner i mentioned above – and thanks @anon67050589, it was macon county missouri - the denominator there would be at or near zero and the percentage nearing infinite because numbers
there’s a certain point where the percentage becomes meaningless, and i probably should have left it out. instead: look at the modelled deaths: 140k - 1.9 million
it’s a huge range, and - to my mind, even at the high end - believable in a country of more than 1.4 billion people.
