Watch this video to see how Laci Fay and her family live every aspect of their lives like its 1958

Word; if we wanna really go there as far as being able to traverse space-time, then my ideal journey would be to the past of an alternate reality… show me the world where European colonization never took hold in America. What would that existence look like?

Presumably, in keeping with the times, she doesn’t have her own email - or bank - account.

The video caption described her as a “50s housewife” so I guess the plan would be to live off her husband’s income?

The good news is “you can do that in the 50s!” The bad news is “you have very few other options in the 50s!”

Excellent point.

There was so much that was so majorly fucked up about the '50s which severely outweighs the aspects that were cool; like the cars, the fashion and some of the music.

Apparently the reason lots of old timey cars (pre-1920s) didn’t have windows and were open top was the glass was even worse than in the days of the Model T. They understood the problem with the glass, but it was a while before someone figured out how to make the laminated stuff.

The good news is you might be able to supplement your income living as a 50s house wife in 2021 due to youtube or something.

Yeah, I hope she’s not relying on birth control pills, modern vaccines, seatbelts and speed limits above 50MPH.

I wouldn’t want to go above 50MPH in any car form the 50’s.

Velcro wasn’t even invented yet.

She must not have a phone…as touch tone phones weren’t publicly available yet, and pulse phones won’t work on today’s phone networks.

She’s on IG.

How very “living my life as if it’s still the 50’s.”

My white dad wasn’t allowed to be friends with a little black boy he met playing in the neighborhood, when he was a kid in the 1950s.

Forsooth, did thine mother get runover by yon carter’s pennyfarthing? No? There’s a big difference in history between fantasyland europe that didn’t even exist, and 1950s America, a lot of people who are alive today had to deal with.

Re: Living in the past.

There are a lot of people who do living history - though rarely literally LIVING the history the whole time. But I do know of some people who are basically roughing it off the grid with no power tools etc. in the woods. Like an old timey settler or farmer, with the occasional ride into town for supplies. PBS had this great series about a guy who moved to Alaska and made his own cabin in the 60s and just lived up there until he got too old.

But in general - we romanticize the past. There is probably no better time to be alive, unless your idea of a good time is to live fast and die young as a heathen.

But the 50s also suffers from the fact they were romanticizing the PRESENT with their media and advertising at the time. I guess with the cold war and the social movements and the changes after WWII they were sort of selling everyone the idea that everything was ok. So you painted on a smile and put on your hat and soldiered on.

I do like aesthetics of the past, and would “visit”, but wouldn’t want to live there.

Thanks for that reminder:

Loving v. VA didn’t happen until 1967; so in 1958 it was still illegal for Black folks and White folks to intermarry in many states.

Oh, what a time it was!

Would not want to go back to the 50’s in the UK. For certain sections of the US and Australian populations the 50’s saw a big improvement in the standard of living. In the UK they still had food rationing on some items until 53/54.
