I have to agree. I have worked on related systems in road and air transport. However I would recommend induction and image based vehicle detectors.

You can say that about a million problems out there. Even if the train takes some speed off when there is a conflict, the damage from a collision will be reduced.

It certainly wouldn’t be a BAD thing to have an indicator or even a video feed in the cab showing that status of the next level crossing. The engineer could initiate non-emergency braking (the kind that doesn’t end up making your replace a bunch of wheelsets because of flat spots) some distance away. There would be the added benefit of just giving the engineer more to do to keep him occupied, because that sort of boring job makes paying attention very difficult.

May I suggest using some of that excess time to share with us a few of the treasures you found?
