I am still always just a little baffled by the degree to which many Christians seem to think they perfectly understand the will of a God they proclaim to be ineffable. I much prefer the Jewish interpretation that once God put the laws into words, He no longer gets a vote on what the laws mean: see The Oven of Akhnai - Wikipedia. Ironically, that would mean that if Pelosi were god, no one would have much reason to listen to her.
This Easter my sister was visiting her in-laws down South and went to their megachurch. They had a big screen and put up the message “Get thy vaccine” as part of a sermon about protecting one another. Apparently a lot of people either left or stopped paying attention at that point, but at the very least it is important to remember that Cawthorn’s viewpoint, while unfortunately common, is not anywhere near universal in any region or religious group.
I am known around here for pointing out that anyone who claims that our little 3 pound gob of brain pudding can fully comprehend the infinite mind of God has some issues comprehending some much much smaller things than that. Usually that is where the conversation ends.
I know. We need lots of voices reminding people of that one. Although personally I thinking the problem starts at the level of ideas like “Words have accepted meanings” rather than anything like comprehension of particular ideas or dogmas.
Very much this. “God is unknowable by mere mortals!” Also: “I will now tell you exactly what he wants!”
Also baffling is how a being that is perfect and all knowing is so bad at communicating clearly that it has caused wars over different interpretations of its will. Which is pretty much proof of its non-existence.
My read of the bible is that god really really likes human suffering. And gets mad when people do anything to try to lessen it.
Then jesus comes along and screws up all this good suffering with this “love your neighbor” talk. But that’s okay, cuz now we have a whole lot of people killing each other over who’s more jesus-y.
I was raised Christian and sent to a Christian middle school and a Catholic High School.
I read my bible and yet now in my 50’s , I must be doing something wrong.
I never been able to say “God wants this”.
And God never bother to speak to me directly as he seem to , with other :Christians "
