I was listening to the Rage Against the Machine track Wake Up recently, and it occurred to me that it’s very much ‘proto-woke’, especially as a lot of what he’s singing about is structural racism in the US. I don’t think RATM are the originators of the phrase, but they’re an early milestone in how ‘woke’ gained it’s current meaning.
Also, it’s a banger of a song 
It’s become a convenient buzzword conservatives can attach to anything they want their supporters to hate. It doesn’t need a specific meaning.
