I read Among Others. I didn’t really get what the hullabaloo was about. It was pretty mediocre.
This may well be operator error. I find most of what passes for Supreme SF and Fantasy pretty these days pretty meh. China Mieville kind of sucks. Perdido Street Station was OK. The City and the City was stupid. The last good thing Kim Stanley Robinson wrote was the California Trilogy and I totally gave up on him after slogging through The Years of Rice and Salt, which was the dumbest thing I ever read. I’ll never read him again. I like Doctorow’s nonfiction work on DRM and privacy. I don’t care for his novels.
So it may well be something about me since a lot of people praise all these works. But reading Among Others was like reading library paste.
