Re: Doctor Sleep

I really have a hard time feeling frightened by a movie that has an Instagram Influencer as one of the primary villains.

The latest episode is, just, well…

Just watched last night.

Meh.

Nowhere near as good as the novel, not that I was expecting it to be. I hated the True Knot in the book, whereas the actors in movie made me feel… nothing.

On another note, I am loving the new Harley Quinn cartoon:

NSFW, not child appropriate.

This well and truly sucks… Are they dumb here or what? Is it just me, or is Jones consistently one of the best actors on that show (I’m part way through season 2). Which just saw the Ways of the Dead episode, which centered around a lynching in the city of Cairo IL, a man named Froggie James, which was a real event that did lead to the end of lynching in the state, which is remarkable… in the show, the connection to the lynching itself and the economic misfortunes of Cairo are connected. They had some great scenes between Anansi, Biliquis, and Ibis about whether or not to get involved in the war, and he accuses Ibis of being neutral because he benefits off the the ongoing racial violence in Cairo. According to him, when they started working on season 2, he became in charge of writing for many of the characters of color… and now he’s just out. WTF?

I’ve not watched the series, but IMHO, Jones is gold.

He’s really great in it. It’s got a solid cast, but he really stands out. They are just fucking themselves firing him.

I don’t watch American Gods, but I’ve enjoyed his work in other things. And yeah, based on the online reactions I’ve seen, they’re shooting themselves in the foot by firing Orlando Jones. A lot of people are saying “well, I’m out now, forget that show.”

They were already suffering from the loss of Gillian Anderson and Kristen Chenowith;

Needlessly getting rid of Orlando Jones ought to be the nail in this show’s coffin.

True about Anderson and Chenowith… I think you’re right, too… This is the new show runner, BTW:

And now there is a rumor circulating they’ve recast Mr. World, so Crispin Glover might not be back, either…

I just hope that Sandman doesn’t have this much trouble when they start that show.

I’m pretty skeptical about any attempt to film Sandman. I hope it goes well, I really do, but that’s going to be hard to do justice to, and expectations will be very high.

I agree… I know there have been several attempts to make it a movie, with nothing getting off the ground. As far as I know, Gaiman will be much more involved in the Sandman series than he is with American Gods, like maybe he’s going to be a showrunner and that seemed to work out well for Good Omens…

Okay… I did not like the end of season 2 of American Gods… They killed Mad Sweeny, though Dead Wife ended up taking his body, so maybe there is some hope there? But he hid the spear in the horde… so I guess that’s something. The 30 seconds with Yddgrasil was completely meh - I mean, 30 seconds of hacking through it so he can figure out Odin is his dad. In the book (so book spoiler) Wednesday basically manipulates Shadow into hanging on the tree for a full 24 hours, and it’s a huge revelation, and a freely given act of sacrifice on Shadow’s part for Wednesday, though Wednesday manipulates him into doing it. And Laura discovers him on the tree, if I’m remembering correctly. Back to the show I do like the Salim and Ifrit story they’ve added in, at least… not sure I liked them going off, to where? And is Laura headed back to NOLA to try get Sweeny back? Looks like they’ll be picking the story up at Lakeside, where Shadow will be hiding out for a while.

Anyway, this was a solid season, except for the final episode, which was really… lackluster.

Another actor isn’t returning:

GAh! that sucks! I guess they really are going to just focus on the Lakeside section of the book but if the intent is to bring other characters back in Season 4, why did Jones say he was fired instead of told that his character wasn’t in season 3?

I’ve been waiting like forever for you to get caught up!

I’m pretty much done with this show now that I know Orlando Jones is out.

There isn’t enough good to outweigh the ‘Meh’ for me.

For seasons 2, I can’t say enough good things about the Ways of the Dead episode… Orlando Jones writing in the back and forth with Anansi, Ibis, and Bilquis was excellent and on point… when he accused Ibis of benefiting from the violence committed against the black population of Cairo… damn. That’s some excellent and quite pointed writing going on there. And I love that they picked a real lynching to embed that arc in. Donar the Great was a good episode as well. I can’t say I did not love the burlesque elements there. But honestly, I can’t tell you how annoyed I am with the Yddrasil. That is really one of the best parts of the book hands down, as it really gives Shadow a great deal of character development. I was hoping for more with Sam Blackcrow, too. She’s a great character in the book, and their meeting and friendship really helps connect him to the Native gods of the American continent much more strongly.

Here is an indepth interview with Orlando Jones about the firing and why the excuses that Fremantle are throwing up are bullshit…
