Whatcha Watchin' (Season 2)

About that:

Makes sense, when you consider the source.

Yeah, that criticism was more than fair enough.

The second lynching just seemed like needless torture porn to me, because instead of advancing the narrative in ANY way, that whole plot arc just fizzled off into nothing.

In the articles you linked, Jones is spot on for calling out the opportunistic ‘culture vulture-ism’ of the show-runners and writers.

Also it confirmed that the Ifrit will not be in S3, either.

:anger:

They’ve essentially taken out all of the interesting characters that were left.

As we discussed before I didn’t watch the show for Shadow and Laura Moon whose dynamic bores me; I watched it for Mad Sweeney, Mr Nancy and the Ifrit.

I’m on Season 7 of Voyager. Previously I binged TNG and DS9. The depression is not gone, and Star Trek makes me feel good. What should I watch next?

Well, it ain’t star trek but the expanse this season has been superb if you’re looking for some thought-provoking science fiction with a lot of politics. Which would sound like hell for a lot of people but i’m loving it, feels like a spiritual successor to babylon 5 in many ways especially now that this current season has really expanded the 'verse.

I’d say Babylon 5 is an excellent choice, especially if you liked DS9. They’re both serial dramas based on space stations, with arcs that continue over a season (and beyond-- all five years of B5 were plotted out in advance, mostly.) I don’t know if it streams on-demand, but I know it airs on Comet TV Monday-Thursday. (Comet’s also running Stargate SG-1. That’s also a fun show, though I think of it more as the sci-fi version of comfort food: simple, a bit predictable, but warm and satisfying. It aired for something like eleven seasons, so there’s plenty to dig into.)

It’s been far too long since I watched this show, but Farscape is another much-beloved sci-fi franchise. It deals with an astronaut mistakenly launched into a far corner of the universe, and how he struggles to adjust to his new alien companions as they travel in a living ship. Hmmm, I think I might need to track that one down myself, I’d like to watch it again.

Are you looking strictly for sci-fi, or just good long-running shows to get into?

I purchase 2 streaming services and have a vpn for the rest so I know I have access :smiling_imp:

Thanks for the suggestion

SNL coming through with a fantastic musical guest in Lizzo, then bringing in Halsey a second time the following week has got to be the most peak white bread SNL.

Hm… she’s biracial… for whatever that’s worth?

Well, knock me over with a feather! This has never crossed my celebrity radar.

I guess that probably comes from weighted media coverage of white-ish celebs over dark-complected POC?

Yes, absolutely the case. I personally like some of Halsey’s music… but I’m a much bigger fan of Lizzo, for sure. She rocks!

It also re-frames my view of Halsey’s kind-of lackluster prior performance, which I chalked up to “white minimum effort”.

I’ve heard the SNL stage is notoriously bad for live performers… I think that makes it all the more impressive when someone can pull off a great performance there. Lizzo slayed it, for example.
[ETA] I think it’s why some pop stars decide to either lipsynch or use some kind of guiding or backing track when they play there.

lizzo-oh-well

I thought this movie was great and I think it ended up underrated. I’m a fan of Stanislaw Lem’s criticism of science fiction that it usually underestimates or elides over the difficulty of even recognizing alien life when you see it, much less successfully communicating with it. This movie, like Solaris (book, haven’t seen movies), certainly does not make that mistake, and IMO pulled it off brilliantly and managed to tackle that problem in an original way despite the shopworn tropes underpinning the movie.

I think it’s one of those movies I’m going to have to watch again to fully wrap my head around it…

There’s probably a better connection, but that’s all I got…

I wonder if we’ll get a backstory about how he rose to power building a secret distribution network under the guise of a rotisserie monkey lizard franchise.
