When asked about Trump's desire to use military on Americans, Justin Trudeau pauses for 20 seconds

Do you mean that it’s cold up here?
Because yeah, but Vancouver Island where I live (straight north of you in BC) is basically Seattle with even less snow IMO. Rainy, yes but not badly. We get flowers in February. It’s pretty mild.

Canada has a lot of different climates. You can’t judge by Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Halifax.

/Edit: grammar fix.

Exactly. I understand the temptation for those with means to cut and run, but if we do were abandoning our country and all those with less means of fighting this tragedy.

I don’t know. I’m not certain that this American society of ours is fit to survive in the 21st century. Our long and violent history is now being stared at through the scope of police snipers. It is enough to make one lose hope.

We had them in use during the Oka Crisis too.

Constitutionally mandated in fact, at least at the federal level.

That is a good point, but “cut and run” is pretty harsh when directed at those who are thinking of the safety of their families. Did people fleeing el Salvadorian death squads “cut and run”? Or did they take what they saw as the only opportunity to save themselves.

We aren’t there yet…but we are teetering on a knife’s edge and if things plunge into utter chaos? There won’t be anything left worth saving - well, except for the $600T in hard assets owned by the US government. You can bet that’ll get looted and re-titled before the lights get turned off.

Yeah, I’m pretty negative. I’m sorry about that. But after spending 35 years marching, protesting, escorting, protecting while being arrested, gassed, and beaten… I’m tired.

Why is Vancouver in that list? It’s actually milder weatherwise than the Island, due to the protection of… that very same island. Also less snow than Seattle. But yeah, “north of” doesn’t automatically equal “colder than.”

I thought about rephrasing, but thought it was clear. I’m tired too. I was talking specifically about people of means, and less tacitly, those of us with the means and privilege to fight this system. Who aren’t already living under constant suspicion and threat of death as a result of the color of our skin. I’m white. I used to be very poor but now I am relatively secure and feel torn. I want to go live in a better place, but then I’m leaving everyone who can’t afford to do so to live with this shit. That’s all I meant. So for now, I’ve decided to stay and fight. I benefited from our schools and libraries and roads. I feel it is part of my duty to try to help make a place where everyone feels safe and has opportunity to do so. If people feel they need to leave for the safety of them or their loved ones, I’m not condemning that. But I feel to leave just because I’m disappointed in my country (and suffering heaps of Weltschmerze) without trying to fix it is kind of a cop out. I still may do it, who knows. But I won’t be proud of it.

That’s why I think we should petition Canada to adopt California. We already use the “CA” abbreviation! And grow a lot of weed! And Governor Newsom would look so nice next to Trudeau. It’d be like collecting the whole set.

“Infamous”? F.L.Q. terror cells had made clear by their actions and words via press-released communiques that they were determined to use violence, including bombings, bank robberies, kidnapping and murder for political ends. Knowing full well the gravity of the situation, and the certain criticism he would face, Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act. Both the Premier of the province of Quebec and the Mayor of Montreal supported this action. He famous quip was in response to a journalist’s question after the Act was in place in fact. There was overwhelming support for Trudeau across Canada and the country has seen almost no political terrorism since. To compare Trudeau Sr. and Trump in the same sentence on anything is just, well, absurd; Pierre Trudeau was a highly educated, articulate man, an internationalist, a true statesman and human rights advocate (responsible for Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms).

Let’s chalk it up to both of us being exhausted and agree that we think this whole situation is FUBAR.

That’s because he doesn’t make his announcements next to a SeaKing helicopter.

Cali might be a bit of a big chunk for Canada to absorb in terms of population. But Washington and Oregon would be bite-sized and politically a little less jarring. Good ports. Good tech, industry, and agriculture. They’d bring a lot to the table.

And if Trudeau sent a couple of Mounties down I-5 in the back of a pickup saying “Sorry to bother you, but you’ve been annexed. Have a nice day.” I would be out there waving my cannabisMaple Leaf flag

When I was in Germany for a couple of weeks for work I was struck by the conversations that my German colleagues had. People I barely knew were perfectly willing to talk to me and each other about things like politics, racism, religion, and even touchy subjects Naziism and the war.

This was in stark contrast to America where “not talking about religion and politics” (and also race) is not just a cliche but deeply ingrained into our culture.

I really believe part of the reason we can’t move forward on so many things is we consider these kind of conversations so uncomfortable and refuse to have them.

Nevermind the “just watch me” quip. What’s remarkable here is first of all him stopping to engage in an impromptu on-camera debate, and secondly how long it lasted. I can’t imagine any politician, much less a world leader, doing this today.
