When hosting SNL, Donald Trump ‘struggled to read,’ says former cast member. Can the President read?

I wonder who types his tweets at 3 a.m.? Maybe he wouldn’t surrender his Android b/c of voice-to-text.

Agreed. Also - she’s amazing and her show is fantastic.

I see your point there; cold reading is really hard for some people. Especially if they’re slow readers because they can’t mentally process the line fast enough to deliver it properly. So I’d say it’s both: he’s a poor reader, and thus can’t cold read.

Not unless a dodgy subordinate tricks him into signing something really bad. Good thing all his immediate staff are such fine upstanding citizens.

Insert “Why can’t we have both” meme

I’ve been working in Las Vegas casinos for over twenty years now, and you’d be surprised how many casino executives are truly illiterate. Some of the so-called “pets” that follow them around to read and write for them. Myself, I was the scribe for four different lower level management types.

And when one of them thinks that you betrayed his/hers secret, they will make life Hell for you.

His wee hours tweets are always in his own voice and are probably written by himself. Daytime tweets are often not in his own voice and probably get done for him. I don’t see a conflict between “struggles to read” and “writes his own tweets.” Twitter is probably one of the few non-video web sites he likes to use because there’s never any walls of text.

Short version: Can trump read & write? Of course. Can he read long or complex material with comprehension and without struggling more than most adults do? Doubtful. He’s going to be dead and in the ground before we learn exactly what degree of literacy he has, but the evidence is pretty strongly against it being very high.

and has enablers, who help him hide that, likely for the sake of his vanity?

I’d never make fun of someone for not being able to read well, it does not make someone foolish and I’d have compassion. But hiding it would be dumb, not really leadership. Plenty of people would have voted for him knowing he had, for example, serious dyslexia (a reasonable supposition, pulled out of thin air).

I disagree. He was born into his position, and conservative minds are disposed to believe the wealthy are their betters.

My only shock in all this is just how much some people will ignore to convince themselves they’re “winning” (Evangelicals, blue-collar types, etc)

First off, I have to make it clear I in no way ever liked or supported Drumpf in any of his exploits.

In this case though I see a combination of learning disability, privilege and plain narcissistic laziness. He obviously has a learning disorder. Which one I don’t know, but he obviously is able to buy himself work-arounds. I have similar issues processing information (visual works better for me) and reading is something where I have to slow down to process. But where I differ is that I can’t afford to buy my way out of the problem.

Drumpf has enough money where he can afford to pay someone to do the “hard work” of reading and processing it to a visual medium he can handle. And for him, processing information may be hard work. The NPD kicks in where he uses his “charms and wits” to manipulate people to do work for him. The skill is second nature to him, since he probably learned it at grade school as his NPD skills improved.

The end result is someone who is lazy and knows how to get people to do what he does not want to do, Great skills if you’re a rich, spoiled brat. Not someone you want in any sort of position where he has power over others.

No he did not. That’s just yet another one of his lies.

He transferred to Wharton’s undergraduate program after two years at Fordham University with the help of family connections. He received a B.Sc in economics and the commencement program does not list him as graduating with any honors, despite his claim to being “top in class.” Summa cum Bullshit

Classmate Louis Calomaris said, “Don … was loath to really study much.”

The future reality TV star would show up to study sessions with classmates without having read the material, Calomaris said, and “didn’t seem to care about being prepared.”

I dunno. This smacks of tabloid trash. Aren’t there dozens of speeches he did on teleprompters just fine (though more robotic than his off the cuff stuff).

I read to my kid and can some times stumble over words. Reading out loud and reading to yourself are two different creatures. As someone else pointed out, cold reading like what actors do is way different than what you or I do. I am sure I would sound robotic and horrible and miss some words in an SNL round table too.

I mean maybe the guy can’t read well. I dunno. Honestly, I think I’d pity the guy than anything. But you don’t need to read to tell people to go do things, which seems to be his one skill set.

Yeah, it’s fairly clear that by “reading” the SNL actor means “Trump couldn’t read his part in character” rather than “Trump can’t comprehend written text”

I bet he’s dyslexic, which Ive been learning recently is more common than people realize.

Without defending Trump, I’ll point out that dyslexic people really have it rough. This was driven home to me when a close friend said he was dyslexic and is thus often mortified on dates because he will have trouble reading a dinner menu, and people will think he’s an idiot.

I’m dyslexic and can struggle to read, especially when stressed. Even then, my reading skills are better than ⊥rump’s appear to be. I had to work hard at it.

If ⊥rump if functionally illiterate, it is a symptom of a bigger problem, that he will struggle with something he knows he can’t do but won’t seek help for it. This is is not a quality you want in any nations leader. It’s not really a quality you want in a CEO either.

Is being capable of reading but choosing to not do so because he can pay someone from that a disability?
