He’s younger than Bernie Sanders. It’s not his age that’s at issue.
Calls for party unity to defeat Trump will apply to the guy who wins the nomination- which the smart money says is Sanders now.
This is flatly untrue. Currently the U.S. government is by far the largest investor in drug development. Its not just the basic research thats publicly funded, but so are most phase I and phase II clinical trials. If the drugs resulting from public research were publicly owned, they could be sold at a small fraction of the current cost while producing enough profit to easily cover any lost research investment from the former pharma companies.
This is arguing that we should collectively donate trillions to corporate profits because they will spend 1% of that on something productive.
Unless humanity has changed drastically in the last few decades, incentive for medical innovation and training will be just fine.
Penicillin, insulin, vaccines, open heart surgery, CPR, trans nasal endoscopic surgery, LMAs, simulation as part of medical training…
Somehow in my two decades of work in medicine, I didn’t not see people figuring out how to do things better did not think first about how much money they were going to get.
The only people I saw doing that were the administrators… not exactly the people developing drugs or medical techniques.
It’s almost as if there were hospitals that existed outside the profit motive (Mercy Hospital here, before UPMC took it over)
Drug companies are multinational. It does not make sense that somehow the only thing keeping their R&D departments afloat are the private insurance industry in the US.
No nightshifts, no weekends. Pension pot in the seven figure range.
Well no one can point for point now… OP has deleted all their posts.
It’s one thing to not want to admit you were wrong; it’s another entirely to try to erase any evidence.
Whether phobia, apathy, or lack of access (financially or physically), being able to get basic dental care is a big problem.
I assume that’s a lot of the incentive; if my hand-eye coordination and spatial skills were better, I’d consider it.
Also there was a great article about neat things dental students had sculpted out of their model teeth but I can’t google it.
NHS England was formed 5 July 1948; 71 years ago.
What are you on about ? You are saying that three generations have been held back because doctors in the UK have no pull … for the last 70 years ?
A low bar.
If Republicans control the House, they can impeach him for being named Bernie. And they will. If they, along with the conservative democrats, control the senate, they will remove him from office.
So, he’d better have Warren as VP!
I don’t remember Matthews ever being this wacky.
Last week, he was calling Sanders an out-and-out “Communist” and wondering aloud why Democrats would ever support someone who would be “another Castro.” I mean, this is the rightest of the right-wing’s propaganda talking points, and Matthews was virtually quoting it verbatim.
I think something is organically wrong with his brain and we’re only now seeing the initial clues. He needs medical attention.
It’s also wrong from the other direction, as well. The other Democrats aren’t France, with the greatest army. The DNC isn’t the greatest army. It’s a shitty comparison on the Nazi level and just a shitty metaphor in general because it doesn’t hold water logically.
One of the reasons I would have preferred to see Warren in the lead of the Dem primaries at this point, vs. Bernie. But, I’ll take Bernie, to be sure.
I’m not sure if it’s a health-related issue or not, but Matthews’ tone has changed over the past few weeks, to be sure. Sanders seems to be aggravating him and other center-right/neoliberal Dems much more now that he’s in the clear lead, vs. even several weeks ago, before votes were cast. It’s ridiculous as far as I’m concerned, and is not true for all MSNBC hosts and contributors (Chris Hayes strikes me as quite Bernie-friendly, they have done town halls together, etc.)
Chris Matthews, Smirking Lips of the Oligarchy.
Wow, such sadness for them and grief memories for me. We lost our 13 yo son in a tragic electrical accident 10 summers ago, and while we were very lucky on the hospital bill end of things, the three years of subsequent insurance company lawsuit drama was worse in some ways than losing my oldest child, who died in my arms. Her story sounds so much more painful than ours, that I am {almost} grateful.
That’s how I ‘read’ it as well. It was stupid and ill-conceived, but not meant as a direct comparison of Sanders to Nazis. Chris Matthews is an asshole dinosaur, but this isn’t the worst thing he’s said.
Age doesn’t make you a dinosaur, attitude does. You can say ‘ok, boomer’ to a 19-year-old who has the same self-centered NIMBY-ness as many sexagenarians.
I find it clueless, at best, and often likely disingenuous, when people complain that Bernie is an “old white guy.”
-
We’ve never had a Jewish president.
-
Jews were historically not considered “white” in America. (And, by “historically,” I mean “well into Bernie’s adulthood.” Jews were still redlined in a lot of WASPy New England towns, and discriminated against in college admissions, even after Bernie was an adult. )
I’m not saying this is the case with you, but I think most of those attacks are from people who just want an excuse to take Bernie down because they know he’s not going to sell out the movement.
These talking heads should really unionize and demand access to better-fitting skin suits. Turning on cable news is a chthulian horrorshow of sweaty flapping meat blowing hot rancid air at other ■■■■■ meat in an endless stream of pre-digested pap. ))<>((
My reference was in regards to C. Matthews and J. Carville and the other asshole.
