I didn’t mean to insinuate the examples were all equals. I was trying to think of stuff on the spot, and that is what i came up with. Like I said, it was more personal failings vs abusing someone else. And of all of my examples his was the most forgivable.

Yeah - it was kinda a big deal at the time BECAUSE HE WAS THE HOST OF KID’S POPULAR SHOW. Granted he was weird and eccentric, but still, jerking off in public, even a porno theater, is creepy no matter who you are. If it was your uncle Jerry then he just wouldn’t get invited to Thanksgiving for a few years.
How are you typing this? Because I guarantee some sexist, racist, or economic exploiter had a hand in creating the device. Or just about anything. They’re ubiquitous enough in our society that to apply your standard means going all “unabomber” and living in a shack in the woods.
Not a big deal though, i’m a massive pee wee herman fan and if i had kids i’d have no problem introducing them to the show knowing about his incident. I think he’s a great comedian and his pee wee persona is equally good.
Hence - “at the time”. I too like Pee Wee and we watched Pee Wee’s Big Adventure earlier this year.
The odd thing about Pee Wee is that it started off as a one man show that had a lot of adult humor, then the movie and then ended up turning into a weird kid’s show. Stranger things have happened i suppose but it’s interesting.
While the title of the post is decidedly inflammatory, I’m surprised at the number of posts here that seem to suggest that no one should have any standards or attempt to control what or who they enrich with their attention and dollars.
It matters to a lot of people for a lot of reasons, and trying to hold them to metric of consistency in their choices is more ridiculous than expecting artists to be above average as a group.
Everyone gets to choose to support or pay for what they want, and it does make a difference. There is a tipping point, and that’s enough for some people.
Roman Polansky sodomizes a minor. Woody Allen sleeps with his adopted daughter and wins an oscar. Harvey Weinstein total scum bag perv using his power for his pleasure. Mel says offensive things while drunk and get blackballed. Hmmmm. What’s wrong with this picture? No one talks about Paul Walker being a pedo. The list goes on and on. All media is controlled and they deem who “gets it” and who gets a pass. Hollywood sucks that’s why they are “purging” the bad to bring their relevance back. Or trying to take the focus off of Las Vegas.
Pound was a naive idiot. His politics, however, were not Fascist. He supported Mussolini because he thought Mussolini supported Pound’s economic ideas, not realising that they were contrary to Fascism. He had a Trump-sized ego and a bad case of Dunning-Kruger system where history, economics and linguistics were concerned. But he didn’t actually do harm to a significant number of people and some of his poetry is brilliant - quite amusing that the man who edited The Waste Land into the great English poem of the first part of the 20th century did not seem to see the need for an editor for himself.
I contrast him with the English critic Kenneth Tynan, who subjected his wife to non-consensual sexual beating (he had an anal obsession apparently). He did harm to an identifiable human being. Pound, out of the weird ideas circulating in his head, did abstract harm but never got around to individual harm.
In the same way T S Eliot’s fashionable 1920s anti-Semitism, caught from Pound, didn’t really do any damage except to Eliot’s reputation.
It’s difficult to tread a path around these issues and decide the correct response. I try to separate the work from the artist but with lingering feelings of discomfort. I wouldn’t have a personal relationship with any of these people, but when it comes to buying a book or watching a movie many other people are involved who are in no way responsible for what a producer or writer may have done in his personal life.
Wow, I thought Ultra-Christians would be good… ultra good people. This makes them sound the exact opposite. So are Ultra-Buddhists or Ultra-Muslims ultra good people? And what does that make Ultra-Atheists?
Extremists of any nature who advocate violence against people of other beliefs are not good people.
“Christian” is not a synonym for “good”.
Paul Walker is dead, and the evidence for him being a “pedo” is National Enquirer level.
You tell me. It sounds like you’re making the case for Mel Gibson being an okay guy who’s only a racist antisemitic Holocaust denier when he’s had a few drinks in him.
My muddled point was that I think Hollywood is very hypocritical for expelling someone for what they say and glorify those actually DOING very horrible things. No Christian is a synonym for goodness, I’ve just never seen it used as a very negative term of action. I would NEVER see that Daddy movie regardless. I’ve never liked Racist Marky Mark.
Meant to say “not” a synonym.
A man abusing women deserves shame.
So does a holocaust denier.
By “ultra-Christian” I mean right-wing, ultra-conservative, and vehement about a white Christian male centered worldview. Not someone who really really thinks that Jesus was extra cool.
Okely dokely doo!
Personally I thought the lack of narration (which I’d gotten used to) detracted from the film. Without the narration, Bryant hauls Deckard into headquarters, then proceeds to sit there and stare at him (where the voiceover used to be). I’ve suspected it wasn’t really a Director’s Cut, to the degree that this wasn’t re-edited.
No it doesn’t, and you know it, so don’t pose for photos with that fatuous comment.
Don’t come all ‘man, we’re all involved, we’re all guilty’. Your outcome is to do nothing,
Doing nothing is useless as fuck.
There’s room between “do nothing” and convicting by association anyone who could have done more.
I see politics in his future.
The kind of parent that shouldn’t have kids.
(Yes, I know that you know, and it was a rethorical question.)
