Wife of top Trump official cheers return of measles

The entire Baby Boom population alive today had the measles…

And many of the Baby Boom population dead today had the measles kill them.

If it was just her kids that would be endangered by not vaccinating them, fine. But the real problem with the anti-vaxers is we require about a 95% vaccination rate to maintain herd immunity. Washington state has whole counties with only 78% vaccinated. At least one school in the area has a rate as low as 40% (source https://www.clark.wa.gov/public-health/immunizations). Then there are people like cancer patients, transplant recipients and others for whom they simply cannot be vaccinated because their immune systems are not strong enough to let vaccines do their job without risking a danger of infection. As long as we can maintain herd immunity this is generally not a problem. But if the vaccination rate is too low, these Anti-vaxers are posing a significant risk of causing deaths of those people for whom vaccination is not an option because of their already weak immune systems.

And public, for educational reasons.

Normally, I wouldn’t wish that horrible disease on anyone. But in the case of this dangerous idiot in a position of influence, she’s gone out of her way to earn it.

5 bucks says she gets the shingles vaccine.

Figures.

An engineered measles virus has been used to deliver medication. Here’s a paper on the subject. And yes, the anti-vaxxers would poop themselves because it’s a GMO

No bet. This garbage person is exactly the kind of right-wing hypocrite who’d do just that.

Probably this:

It sounds like the exact kind of thing that would be misinterpreted and passed around in their ignorant bubble world.

Stupid, irresponsible advice will enthrall stupidly irresponsible people.

I second that - all of the diseases she mentions can have horrible and possibly deadly complications. When I was 18, I contracted mumps (it sometimes happens even after vaccination) and had severe complications - first testicle inflammation and then meningitis. I spent about two weeks in hospital and there was a real risk that I’d die. While I didn’t really care about dying or living then (and never wanted to have children), the whole situation was really unpleasant and for a person who cares about such things could be traumatizing.

(edit: I’ve misremembered it - I think that it was not brain inflammation (encephalitis), but inflammation of the brain’s protective membranes - meningitis)

I had shingles (possibly due to stress and working too much) in my twenties, and even though it was a very mild case, it was impressively painful. An acquaintance had more severe case, and having seen that, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone (maybe with the exception of prominent anti-vaxxers, if it would help them change their minds, which I sadly doubt). Ms Shine is more than an anti-vaxxer thought - that’s the first time I’ve seen someone advocating for diseases, so maybe it wouldn’t be all that bad for her to taste her own medicine.

Yes, there’s even a name for it, survivorship bias.

@RickMycroft and @tsath yeah that line of research is what I figured was being wildly misinterpreted but I was curious if there was something specific to anti-vaxxer world that was being cited or referenced. Biomedical science is also repurposing herpes for neural gene therapy and lentiviruses for immune cell engineering. Anti-vaxxers claiming engineered measles is good to fight against cancer is like claiming that herpes protects against Alzheimer’s disease.

Even then! Those kids didn’t ask to have insane parents who’d put their lives at risk from a totally preventable disease!

If it didn’t affect other families I’d probably be against mandatory vaccinations, but failing to vaccinate your children would still be abhorrent and worthy of public shaming.

Here’s hoping that the measles left her sterile.

Listeria monocytogenes has also been engineered/modified as a cancer treatment delivery method. The key word in all of these being modified. I don’t suggest having some tainted snacks as a cancer cure, either.

I survived measles, too. The difference is that I know I was lucky as shit.

How long after birth are children normally vaccinated from measles? And can a vaccinated individual carry it and pass it on?

I guess I’m trying to ask how contagious can it be if most people are immunised and kids don’t travel as much as adults.
