With apologies, it is overwhelmingly in the media's interest that Trump wins

Some ■■■■■-critical posts (not specifically yours) can seem…gratuitous. I have to admit I feel compelled to read thru some of them because they may play on my fears, or a desire to laugh at and confirm him (yet again) as a fool, or both.

Maybe also stop posting about them would be a good start… and stop linking to Muskrat’s fascist platform while we’re at it.

I just find this timeline too damn weird lately. How can we even be considering an incompetent man-baby with all the self control of a toddler, who was voted out of office because he so BADLY fumbled the government’s response to a worldwide pandemic that a million Americans died (half of whom might have lived if we had, say, a competent chief executive at the wheels and levers of government). The same guy who, when he barely lost the 2020 election, sent a raging mob to sack the Capitol and hang his vice president… this should not even be close. A racist, sexist, plainly stupid failure of a man, completely propped up by lies and money. And attention…

At least I can flee to Canada… hopefully. Or just bunker down in liberalist CA and stock up on potassium iodide.

I’ve been making an effort recently to avoid the clickbait attraction of outrage headlines for pretty much the reasons you’re suggesting. Media runs on eyeballs. So they are going to supply what we look at most reliably.

Even if they want to write about other things, if we don’t read it, and engage with it, they can’t sell it.

Well one could actually, in the MSM - and hear me out here - write about what an ABSOLUTE FUCKING NAZI PIECE OF SHIT HE IS. Just spitballiin’ here…

He already explained why he/they can’t. Nobody reads the other stuff.

Maybe you want to argue he just has to write better and then people would read other things. But the sad fact is, the *Rump stories don’t need better writing.

Nobody can write Pulitzer class material every day. But you do have to get paid every day.

I get my news from the BBC, which is ad-free (in the UK, IDK about the US) and from The Guardian, which seems to be ad-free though I’m a subscriber so maybe it’s switched off.

Anyway, it appears that Kamala won the debate.

Without question. Trump was a flailing, failing nincompoop.

Undoubtedly.

Yet he is still within a couple of 100K votes of re-entering the White House

I really, truly wish that I could make that make sense.

Do you remember that sudden sense of calm when Biden took office? Wonderful :hugs:

I’m in danger of becoming a stuck record here, but as long as advertising remains the primary source of income for most media outlets, it’s no surprise that they will report on the content that gets them the most clicks.

I’ve even tried subscribing to one of my favourite sites in the past in order to try and help stem the decline into enshittification, but it made no difference. I still had to use an ad blocker, despite them proclaiming that subscribers would receive an ad free experience.
Income from subscribers can never hope to match the income from ad revenue.

I used to naively believe that as the next, tech-savvy generation came of age, advertising as a revenue model would die, because surely they’d all be using ad-blocking technology.
But nope, that never happened.

And to be honest, I don’t know what the alternative to advertising is. Media outlets need to get their money from somewhere.
At the point of delivery, people are becoming less and less prepared to pay an up-front cost, because chances are, even if they do pay a media outlet for their content, they’ll still get adverts, be it Sky TV or Netflix’ ad-supported tier (why the fuck these aren’t free is beyond me), or product placement, or sponsored content.

Ad-blocking is the only answer I can think of, but it requires mass engagement, and not enough people seem to care about it to bother.

They’re too TERFy for me now, I feel like I’m walking across a minefield whenever I go there.

All news sites/papers/channels will have biases, I just prefer it when that bias isn’t “We hate that you and people like you exist, and will actively work towards eradicating you from the country”. It used to be easy, just don’t read the Daily Heil or the S*n and you will be OK, now I’m mostly reading and watching English language news from the EU.

When you can win an election with only about 22% of the vote, it makes a depressing large amount of sense.
