I was curious so I looked this place up. Looks like the most robust fencing they have is pretty basic. This is just about 10 miles from Vegas, which probably seems like a very short walk until you get out in that desert sun. Not the first time someone was willing to risk it, apparently.

There are more, but some of the outcomes started getting grim(mer), so let’s leave it at that.

i guess she was not regretful enough to do her time, though.

Saying that “I wish that decision to drink and drive had not happened” is a weird way to express regret. It makes it sound like something that just happened rather than something that she did and is accepting responsibility for.

Maybe at her age she figured that a 10-year prison term could essentially be a life sentence. I wonder how far she’ll make it.

Came here to say this. As a Nevada resident, we see these stories pretty often. They usually get picked up later.

I think the idea behind this kind of minimum-security prison isn’t that it’s crazy difficult to escape, it’s that most people incarcerated there are serving sentences that seem less intimidating than the idea of spending the rest of their lives on the run.

A healthy 69-year-old woman serving a 10-year sentence will probably have a chance to live in freedom again some day, especially if she’s eligible for parole. Even if she survived that walk through the desert her future prospects probably aren’t looking a lot better than what she had in store anyway.

Apparently your odds of even having the option of spending the rest of your life on the run are fairly tepid. Both that source and others give figures north of 90% for recapture in a year or less; with many escapees lasting only days.

The correctional types obviously aren’t thrilled; and things can get a lot more serious if it’s someone with a particularly dire criminal history or who uses violence during either the escape or the subsequent evasion attempts; but at the level of minimum security it seems like escape is more of a terrible idea than a terribly difficult one.
