I think this is the scariest part of Trump. His statements have that ring of mealy-mouthed racist/facist, “well, I didn’t order them to go and assault Mexican people, all I did was say that Mexicans are rapists and murderers.”

I’m lucky enough to live in a fairly polyglot area, and my main reaction when I hear people conversing in their native language, then turning around and speaking English to me, is a twinge of envy that my command of other languages is just enough to be rude 
I can still say “Huh?” in at least 6 languages, though.

This is why, when people ask “what superpower would you want in real life?”, I say Cypher. I’ll even pass on being able to understand computer languages. Terrible superhero, awesome real-life power.

Exactly. I’d be willing to consider a bit more leniency if I even believed that these were true heartfelt beliefs by the tRump and fox news folks, but we all know it’s just pandering to the base fears of their racist audience. (and to explain, I’d be more apt to defend their right to spew their stupid ideas under “freedom of speech” if it were a true espousal of their [admittedly racist and idiotic] minds, but I’m dramatically less likely to do so when it’s not about defending someone’s right to be an idiot, but defending their right to spew hatred that hurts real people just so they can get ratings or $$$.

Well, all the assault degrees are really about intent and extent. So in this case it was more “crime of passion” than premeditated, and it was only one swing, not multiple blows.
And generally prosecutors go for the lowest crime that they know they can get a conviction on. Like you’d hate for this lady to walk on a technicality because you couldn’t get a jury in Minnesota to agree the mug was “a weapon.”

Yes, depends on the situation and the day. I’d say, as objectively as I can manage, that we have evolved from them, but considering the state of the world we haven’t evolved very far.
