When I was in college in the early 1970s, I had a suite mate from Iowa who swore that the state sport was girls’ basketball. Granted, he was from a pretty small town, but he said that every town turned out for its girls team. I have no idea if this is a big thing in Iowa anymore, but I get the impression that people turn out for the athletes who do it better than anyone.
