I had to Google an older article to make sense of this headline.

In case you were as confused as I was: he doesn’t support them declaring themselves independent, on the principle that they already are independent and such a move would only be a provocation.

Democratically-governed Taiwan strongly objects to China’s claims but says it does not need to declare independence because it is already an independent country.

U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, have underscored this year that the United States does not support Taiwan independence.

It’s no change. A longstanding policy approach.

The One China policy refers to a United States policy of strategic ambiguityregarding Taiwan.[1] In a 1972 joint communiqué with the PRC, the United States “acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Straitmaintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China” and “does not challenge that position.”[2] It reaffirms the U.S. interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question.[3] The United States has formal relations with the PRC, recognizes the PRC as the sole legal government of China, and simultaneously maintains its unofficial relations with Taiwan while taking no official position on Taiwanese sovereignty.[4][5][6] The US “acknowledges” but does not “endorse” PRC’s position over Taiwan,[7][8]implying it neither supports nor rejects China’s sovereignty over Taiwan, and has considered Taiwan’s political status as “undetermined”.[9]

I have to vote twice because the Finnish presidential elections are coming up again. We used to have this highly undemocratic system with electors.

Looking online, it seems like a two-round election. Can you vote for your actual favourite candidate in the first one, or is there a need to make sure that one acceptable person gets into the run-off?

I’ll vote for my favorite in the first round, but I might consider a tactical approach. Most likely it comes down to Stubb or Haavisto in the second round, I’ll be casting my vote against Stubb.

German investigative journalists uncover what is alleged to be a secret plan to deport possibly millions of people from Germany by a future far-right government, euphemistically called “remigration”. Could this be true?
