Some time ago I had read that one of the reasons for the invasion of Ukraine would be a way to alleviate Russia’s population loss. Taking over that entire area, they added millions of Russian speakers and people with cultural ties to the country.

Russian ethnonationalists see Ukrainians as Slavs who can be indoctrinated to accept a Russian national identity and fully assimilated into the ethnic Russian population, and thus preferable to ethnic minorities like Chechens and Tatars and immigrants from Central Asia and the Caucausus.
