“ The Chinese sortie came as the U.S. military said that two of its carrier strike groups were sailing on Sunday in the South China Sea, led by USS Carl Vinson and USS Abraham Lincoln. They engaged in anti-submarine, air and combat readiness operations.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment on why the PLA had flown such a large sortie on Monday, saying it was not a diplomatic matter.”

True. From their “official” point of view this is the same as the US flying sorties over Texas.

But it’s probably no coincidence that China is testing this as tensions with Russia are on the rise in Ukraine.

Given that China’s position is that any region which has ever been part of China is always part of China, from Samarkand to the Pacific, and that anyone whose descendants are from China are always Chinese, this is true.

It’s imperialist bullshit, but that’s kind of what empires do.

Is it really that surprising that a country that is currently a mediator in peace talks doesn’t want to send offensive weapons to one side, clearly favouring them?

For another perspective please remember that the German (and French) response is built upon a different interpretation of the strategic situation:

France, looking at the same intelligence provided by the CIA, does not see an imminent invasion, or a gathering of forces equipped to invade in the next three weeks – an assessment shared by the best Ukrainian defence analysts

ETA: Honestly, from where I sit, this all looks like the anglosphere is sinking into cold war fantasies and whipping themselves up for a war they for some reason want. Even here, users I would never have taken for war hawks are surprisingly on board with it. It all reminds me of the pre-Iraq days.

It wouldn’t surprise me. It’s the distraction that de Pfeffel wants right now. Maybe he will have a war “work event” with his “colleagues” if it works.

Fuck yeah! I can see that even here where the usual lineup of “security experts/analysts” etc. are promoting us buying lots of weaponry. Words cannot express how little I trust those “experts” and how often they have unsavoury connections and unsupported opinions.

Like, just as an example, see how much they are salivating at getting a crack at actual current generation Russian armour which is a rarity.

Stop wanking about war. Seriously.
