Today, a new law went into effect in Japan, lowering the age of majority from 20 to 18. Although Japan had already lowered the voting age to 18 several years ago, this reform means that people who are 18-19 can now enter into legal contracts not cosigned by their parents and can be charged as adults for crimes.
You still have to be 20 to drink alcohol or smoke tobacco, but this has never been that strictly enforced.
