I think I know where you’re coming from, but that doesn’t make any sense.

I think it’s a nod to folks like her wanting France to be the way it was, and many of her young followers do Nazi what’s coming if she gets into office and continues to treat Putin as an ally.

Or, worse, they understand very well.

Yes. That’s what I thought/think. But it1) still doesn’t make sense.

1) The “Relocation of the government” (from Paris to Vichy) bit. It’s an analogy that simply doesn’t work, for various reasons. Which I’d be happy to discuss in a thread of its own. (Later. I’m supposed to leave for a lengthy drive in an hour and haven’t packed yet.)

Yeah, well, they missed out on having a go at fascism when all the cool kids around them were doing it by a pretty narrow margin back then. And sort of forgot about it after 1945.

Context: Australia is having a Federal Election in a bit over five weeks.

On the first day of campaigning, a reporter from the Murdoch press (Sky News in this case) asked the Labor opposition leader a Gotcha question: “What is the unemployment rate”. The answer was “It’s five point… No, I don’t know.” And the media pack smelled blood in the water.

Never mind that the Liberal/National coalition government is the most incompetent and corrupt Australian government in living memory, the opposition leader hadn’t memorised the Unemployment rate! (Never mind that that number is meaningless, as it includes anyone who’s working more than an hour a week. And especially never mind that if he had known that number, they would have tried another gotcha, and another, and another, until they found one that stumped him.) The population has largely been deeply unimpressed by the whole display.

Today, the leader of the Australian Greens was giving a speech at the National Press Club, and another Murdoch rag reporter (this time from the Australian Financial Review), tried the same trick on.

He did not appreciate being handed his own arse.

Today, the Japanese Yen fell to 126 to the US Dollar for the first time in 20 years. The explainers that I am seeing say that this is because the US Federal Reserve Board is beginning to raise interest rates to combat inflation, spurring investors to sell off Yen and buy Dollars.

The Bank of Japan (Japan’s central bank) is saying that raising interest rates would do more harm than good right now due to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. As such, the Yen will likely remain weak against the Dollar for the foreseeable future.

Sorry, I don’t know what your reaction means?

I wonder if there’s a quick rundown somewhere of the pros and cons. I don’t know enough to guage if their joining would be a good or a bad thing…

Should it happen, though, I can imagine Russian leaders perceiving it as a provocation, and/or claiming that.

Finland has this massive pro-Nato hysteria. It’s stoked by right-wing think tank.

It’s horrifying trying to talk about Nato’s war crimes you get yelled at “you are with Putin” etc.

One of the few things I could proud of about my homeland is that we didn’t do many crimes against humanity since 1944 but future looks so dim.
