He did win, but the margin was too narrow.
That’s such great news both for Brazil and the whole world. Hopefully Erdoğan and Orbán soon too.
I’m worried about how the new Israeli elections will come out, too. Why do people love corrupt, bigoted assholes so very much?
All the happy gifs! OMG, that is SUCH GREAT NEWS!
And really, such a relief!
Damn!
Probably they are right. Mr. Bolsonaro fractured the country and perverted the institutions. Mr. Lula have a hard task before him.
That will be difficult to rebuild, but the chances of going down that road are far better under Lula, of course…

Though coppers gonna coppper the world over.
snatching despair from the jaws of victory.
Yeah…
I mean, Biden leaves a lot to be desired, but the difference between him and Trump is to the point where America wouldn’t have a democracy to fix if he didn’t win. If as robertmckenna linked Lula is going after people who do things like try to rig elections, that’s a big deal. Maybe we can actually keep some rainforest for a while because of this. I can’t begin to say how important that is for everyone.
It absolutely is, but we need to see rich countries deforestation as needing reversal too. We haven’t a leg to stand on telling less wealthy countries to not do the very things we did. What is now the Amazon rainforest used to be fields and roads and towns and villages and cities before colonialism and disease culled the vast majority of the population of South America. We didn’t have global warming when it was populated and developed. It’s all on the industrial countries and consumerism from the 19th C onwards.
That’s what Mr. Bolsonaro fears at most.
ETA:
Although I highly doubt it. Unlike other Latin American countries, for example, Brazil did not arrest/prosecute agents of the dictatorships of the 1970s/1980s.
For 2 out of 3:
Gee, does that sound familiar to those of us in the States!
Mr. Bolsonaro took notes and was a good student…
