What if, instead, there was a drastic uptick in applications for gun permits by members of non-white races?
I’m not trying to be snarky: this is a serious question. Are gun permits even a thing in the US? I know that that some states require permits for things like concealed carry, but in how many states do you need a permit just to acquire a gun?
Wait. So a government-assured right is necessary to protect yourself against a government that has suspended your rights.
Sounds like you wouldn’t need rights at all in that case, you’d just need the gun.
And if you do need a gun to fight for domestic democracy, you are not defending it–you’re trying to reclaim it.

Yeah, this line of reasoning always seemed bananas to me. People who lead armed rebellions against despotic governments generally don’t care whether said governments granted them legal permission to do so.

That’s really interesting. Without previously knowing anything about it, those are the sorts of structures I had assumed must be in place, especially given that the NRA membership holds different views than the NRA itself does officially.
Yeah, the fact that it was taken over, and has increasingly moved in a direction that is pretty disconnected from where the membership wanted it to go, seems like a pretty good indicator that someone had restructured it so that it isn’t democratically controlled and the views of the membership aren’t taken into account.

Yeah, one was a group of white people, and one was a group of people who have historically had almost ever single treaty made them broke in favor of whites.
If the government had wanted to, they could have easily taken out the Bundy ranch the very same way they did in Ruby Ridge or Waco. They didn’t, because the president at the time was well aware of the uproar it would have caused.

Now now, no need to shoot a messenger that even your posted link describes as a “venerable left-wing blog.” I’ve read a lot of good stuff there, including many by writers who mostly get ignored elsewhere because they’re too far left (though it’s true that they could do with more careful editing sometimes, and copyediting) . Besides, as your source also says, at least 12 other places were also duped into publishing that trolley’s writing.
As a proud member of the gun-owning, white, male, oppressor patriarchy, I nevertheless welcome American citizens of all races, creeds, religions and colors to join our ranks as gun owners.
It’s your first step up from “subject” to becoming an “American citizen.”

You don’t always win, even with the best intentions.
From what I’ve seen, those white males in the U.S. who truly believe that a firearm is what makes the difference between a subject and a citizen are those who don’t have much else going for them in their lives besides being white and male (and who, despite their over-protestations of patriotism, don’t have much confidence in the rest of the Constitution).
