Wyoming GOP Senator explains death-penalty vote by saying that being executed was good enough for Jesus, so it's good enough for criminals

Not many “Christian” nations on this listimage

But many in this list? What does that say?
(Capital punishment abolition)

Wow, did Vatican City really used to have the death penalty?

Last execution on July 9th 1870. Mazzatello was used in ancient times, then hanging, beheading and from early '800 guillotine. Never used within the Vatican City itself and only carried out in the Papal States by local authorities where the sentences were handed out. From 1870 to 1929 the Vatican had no sovereign territories, and no death sentences were applied. Officially re-introduced in the Law Codes in 1927, only in case of assassination of the Pope. Abolished in 1969 (abolition officially ratified in 2001 only).

Huh, and they finally stopped saying it was sometimes okay, way back in 2018.

Good for them.

(And a small nitpick, and I know you’re just quoting here…

Mazzatello was invented by the Papal States and used through the 19th century, so it’s a bit of stretch (by whoever that is you’re quoting) to call that “used in ancient times”. It’s younger than the US.

(It was administered by local authorities, but that’s true of nearly all capital punishment. Executions in the US aren’t done on the White House lawn, Eddard Stark-style.)

AFAIK Utah at one point had the option for condemned criminals to choose death by beheading (and until recently allowed them to opt for the firing squad), because of Mormon ideas about blood atonement.

Nobody has ever been executed by beheading in Utah, though quite a few have been shot.

Strange that the One Sen. Hutchins is citing here said: “Let the person who is without sin cast the first stone.”
I presume Sen. Hutchins will be applying for the privilege of flipping the switch.
