My dog Kia (an angel in a dog suit as far as I’m concerned) was one of two dogs whose owner died, and they weren’t found for four days. I didn’t ask any questions, but the family didn’t, or couldn’t take at least Kia (I don’t know what happened to the other dog), but were very happy that Kia went to a good home.
I’m fine with my pets noshing on me after I’m gone.
The dogs obviously had a choice of food, both kibble and slightly ripened steak. I wonder, though, where they were able to get water. Were they big dogs and just drank out of the toilet? How long would that last?
I recently started feeding my dogs “fresh” food instead of dry kibble (I put fresh in quotes because I buy it, a months worth is delivered at a time, and I freeze it), and their water consumption has dropped dramatically. Fresh raw meat would have even more water in it. They would probably get enough water from the body, as long as the house wasn’t super hot.
Honestly, I’d see my dog eating me postumously as a really good sign; since it would imply that our respective lifespans lined up such that I don’t have to deal with losing my dog.
My last dog died years ago and I still can’t face the prospect of doing that again.
