10 killed in Dayton mass shooting

I don’t think music is to blame by any means, but I also don’t believe that people who create music and imagery like this:

The band’s song titles are explicitly Sexually violent, such as “Preteen Daughter Pu$$y Slaughter” and “Cunt Stuffed With Medical Waste - Sexual Abuse Of A Teenage Corpse.” The album art is equally explicit. One album cover shows a woman consuming feces, while another shows an illustration of a headless body of a young woman chained to a bed, covered in blood, as a man puts his pants back on.

are “just kidding”, in spite the band members’ statements claiming otherwise. That’s pure misogyny.

I’m not saying that, and I the article isn’t really saying that. But someone will say that in their attempt to grasp at straws, though. Because they’ve been doing that since Columbine.

Nor am I defending the music either, cause that shit is pretty misogynistic (and the guy clearly had misogynistic tendencies going back to his HS days). Black metal and it’s offshoots have been controversial since they emerged out of norway and some members of that scene went on a church burning and then murder spree. But plenty of music that has extreme lyrics is defensible, too, and not misogynistic or racist. This seems like not it.

Useful graphic, for when someone parrots the right wing talking point about video games:

Some music is extreme, and some of it is an outlet for those extreme thoughts just like some art or fiction is, and some of it for sure is distasteful. I’m sure our music collections are very different with perhaps one or two similarities - the thing is you can’t define somebody’s actions or beliefs simply from their taste in music, but that hasn’t stopped people trying ever since music became available for purchase.

Yeah, I agree that some folks will blame everything other than the guns and the shooters.

I have to apologize for not being more clear in my comment. I was really trying to get at these quotes:

Pornogrind is like an offshoot of goregrind that’s more lighthearted and has more sexual themes,"

"The music is pretty obscene but the people who revolve around it are usually really cool people.

It should go without saying that this is just one detail and by no means an explanation for the shooters motivation.

But goddamn it, sexual violence against women isn’t a fun theme. It’s fucking a reality for women all over the world and worse, it’s somehow not at all surprising that it’s a genre of music.

It’s not as useful as you think, though. The revenue in South Korea, for example, comes from much less violent (at least viscerally or realistically violent) games like League of Legends, Starcraft, etc. So while there’s a lot of money being spent on gaming, the vast majority isn’t spent on first-person shooters where you literally shoot people in the head.

I think the breakdown is similar in most Asian countries, actually, although I haven’t done a deep dive into the details.

So comparing revenue to actual gun violence (or use of violent video games) isn’t really apples to apples.

the us, uk, france, germany all have pretty similar game playing habits. germany long had laws about violent games and blood in games, and people would just buy them from the next country over.

yeah, the graph isn’t perfect but it gets the point across

I have not seen this brought up yet, but I would like to propose that this one should put an end to the “good guy with a gun” fantasy. Cops engaged the shooter and ended this shooting 32 seconds after the first shot. 32 seconds. That is about the best out come that could possibly be hoped for in an active shooter situation. And look at the casualty list. If that is the very best that the “good guy” scenario can offer, we need a better answer. Period. And of discussion.

While she will likely always be a garbage person her website is an hilarious shitshow, almost as if it were a parody put together by The Onion.

Oh dang, I hadn’t considered the monkey’s paw possibly where GOP candidates vie for the support of the pedophile community. I guess we’re already halfway there if Roy Moore is any indication.

Wow. Well she certainly made a name for herself with that. Not sure how long it will stay there, but references to her rant have already been added to her Wiki page.

As an Ohio native, I have to slightly disagree there.

Much of the media chooses to see the entire state of Ohio as some sort of stereotypical milquetoast, middle-American heartland; it’s why shows like Family Ties, Third Rock From the Sun and Glee are set there.

If it were the only thing, and he hadn’t just shot up a street in Dayton, or didn’t have a history of harassing women while in HS, and treated women like human beings, then that’s one thing, but given all the other shit on top of these lyrics… yeah. No question.

Agreed. It’s one thing to reference it to make a point about how bad it is… another one to make light of it. But then again, rock music in general often has a long history of creepy songs about women.
